Mike Smith is the Chief Operating Officer for the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem. He has over 20 years experience in the non-profit sector working for a wide range of public service organizations. He joined the NDS management staff in 2011.
As Chief Operating Officer for NDS, Mike oversees all Office Administration, Human Resources, Financial Management, and Technology, and is responsible for developing short-and long-term goals for fiscal sustainability. Mike began his career as a public defender in Suffolk County. He then switched gears to the management side of public service and became the Founding Executive Director of Rosie’s For All Kids Foundation, dedicated to awarding grants to grassroots nonprofits providing a variety of health and educational services for low-income, at-risk children. At Rosie’s For All Kids Foundation, Mike framed the organization’s mission, established and implemented all organizational guidelines as well as developed long-term strategies for endowment growth. Continuing his commitment to public service, Mike then went on to become the Chief Operating Officer for Charity Navigator, the largest evaluator of American charities. Most recently, Mike served as the Managing Director for Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence, Inc., the leading nonprofit provider of business resources, education tools and community support for women business owners growing their micro-businesses into million dollar enterprises.
Mike graduated from Colgate University, and received his J.D. from the University of Bridgeport, School of Law (now Quinnipiac University, School of Law).
