Dear Friends,
It is a challenging time for public defense. Our communities from Harlem to Detroit are under threat. Poverty is persecuted at the subway turnstile, at bail hearings, and in family court. Our neighbors are threatened with eviction while public housing is under siege. Protections for immigrants are eroding.
In short, public defense is more important now than ever. The victories NDS won in 2019 – in the courthouse, in the legislature and in the political discourse – have created essential space for our communities to thrive. 2020 will present yet more opportunities to fight for and secure lasting victories, but we need your help.
Our continued success in this fight depends on your support. Make an end-of-year contribution to Neighborhood Defender Service to fight mass incarceration from Harlem to Detroit and beyond.
In addition to representing thousands of clients this past year, NDS fought relentlessly for justice around the country and around the world in 2019.
2019 saw us:
- Bringing world-class representation to Detroit: NDS Detroit opened its doors this fall, providing unparalleled defense to Wayne County’s most vulnerable residents.
- Fighting for marginalized communities in the legislature: NDS’ relentless advocacy helped secure the passage of groundbreaking reforms around bail and discovery laws; massive expansion of tenant rights; and protections that will help keep families together, where they belong.
- Hosting essential conversations around solitary confinement and mass incarceration: NDS brought together legendary activist and author Albert Woodfox and Nicole Austin-Hillery, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch’s US Program, for a forum on how we win the struggle against mass incarceration.
- Advocating for justice worldwide: NDS staff consulted with public defenders around the world—in Argentina, Myanmar and Afghanistan —connecting our efforts to a global movement for justice.
Help us make 2020 even more successful with a donation. 100% of your contribution will advance the mission, vision and values of NDS.
Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season,
Rick Jones
